THE USE OF PLANTS IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AS ELEMENTS BIOCLIMATIC
![]()
There are more and more projects that are integrated plants in the building structure, not as a skin or green facade, but as an integral part of the building. Thus, the concept of biomimicry driven by Jorge Riechmann (the idea that mimic human creations of nature), has inspired architects such as Ken Yeang . Yeang bioclimatic skyscraper projects that incorporate the landscaping of the facades so that the vegetation is mixed with the structures, shaping different ecosystems staggered. The vegetation is one of the pillars of these creations, not a complement. The first objective is, first, restore biodiversity by incorporating native plant species, absent in the urban terrain. This vegetation is suitable to the environment and need less watering, less maintenance and less fertilizer. The second objective is to leverage the capabilities of improving environmental conditions in plants. Therefore, also incorporated non-native species whenever these benefits, such as scavenging properties of contaminants. In these projects, such as the "Tower EDITT" incorporating carefully planned vegetation is fundamental to the passive operation of the building. SOURCE: terra.org
